Welcome to the world - baby boy creates history

Oakland John Barnett has won the race to claim the honour of the first baby born in Liverpool Hospital’s new and expanded birthing unit, part of the Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct redevelopment.

The handsome baby boy made his entrance to the world at 1.02pm on 3 December, weighing 3.9kg and measuring 51cm, ahead of the four other babies born in the new unit on its opening day.

Parents Liliana Middleton and Chris Barnett were delighted their first baby had made history, although the proud couple said they had no idea Oakland was the unit’s first delivery.

“We were so surprised, and very happy to hear Oakland was the first to be born in the new unit,’’ Liliana said. “It was the last thing on our minds!”

The couple, from West Hoxton, thanked midwife Julie Russo and the birthing and maternity teams for their wonderful care and support at this special time in their lives.

“The new unit is amazing. We were able to compare the old unit to the new and we are so impressed with the new space. It was much bigger than we expected, ‘’ Chris said.

Julie, who began her midwifery career at Liverpool Hospital as a student in 2017, was thrilled to assist in the history-making birth.
“I am looking forward to other women and families experiencing our beautiful new facilities. We love the new unit.’’ Julie said.

“The suites are women-centred, welcoming, have brand new equipment, birthing baths, wonderful artworks and so much natural light.”

General Manager Scott McGrath congratulated Liliana and Chris and presented them with a gift acknowledging Oakland’s special place in the hospital’s history.
