Meet lenny, our new apprentice

We are proud to be supporting our region’s young people and apprentices by creating various pathways into construction.

Liverpool local, Lenny, is preparing to work on the Liverpool Hospital Redevelopment site, after landing an apprenticeship with construction company Eirinn Gas and Water soon after graduating from high school in 2022.

The 18-year-old First Nations apprentice was initially referred by his school to participate in a ‘Walk About’ site tour at the Liverpool Hospital redevelopment site facilitated by Souths Care. Along with other students, Lenny had the opportunity to access a live construction site, hear expert advice on career pathways, and find out how to apply for apprenticeships.

He met Lendlease Aboriginal Workforce and Industry Participation Manager, Celeste Dargan at the Buraga Gul Skilling and Employment Hub, who presented a range of pathways into construction.

Soon after completing the Construction Pathway Program through the hub, Lenny landed his very first interview and successfully secured his first apprenticeship.

Lenny has shared some wise words to those who may be thinking about a career in construction:

How did it feel going for your first interview?
I was pretty confident as I had learned everything I needed through the Construction Pathway Program.

What does your week look like with work? I get up at 3am every day and catch three trains to work in Penrith. Then I come home, eat and sleep so I’m ready for the next day. I’ll be moving to the Liverpool site soon.

What have you learned so far? I’ve learned how to use power tools safely and efficiently and have been installing new pipes on site and making sure they all work.

What advice would you give to your friends or peers who are thinking about a career in construction? Prepare yourself as it takes up a majority of your time and do what you love – if you don’t there’s always other opportunities in construction. Also, make sure you speak up if you feel like something is unsafe as safety is a big thing.
