Driving innovation in our operating theatres

Three new operating theatres will be delivered as part of the $790 million redevelopment of Liverpool Hospital, including an emergency theatre, a general theatre and an expanded operating theatre, delivering the latest advanced technology.

During the planning and design phase, clinical staff representatives were invited to attend project user group sessions to discuss the unique needs of their department, resulting in a range of new service upgrades and capabilities, including:

  • Ultra-high definition digital operating rooms with audio visual technology.
  • Ability to livestream procedures globally and directly from the operating room for clinical and educational purposes.
  • An integrated system to enhance operational efficiency and provide clinicians with various options to connect, display and record procedures from any medical device, helping to improve patient outcomes.

Senior Nurse Manager Perioperative Services, Janine Lajch, is delighted that new innovative practices are being implemented.

“A new integrated system will give our operating team a holistic view of the patient, within one theatre, helping to increase productivity and work flows for everyone in the space,” Ms Lajch said.

Surgeons from the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery (TACS) unit, Dr Valerie Malka, Dr Paul Lambrakis and Dr Scott D’Amours are looking forward to seeing the operating theatres grow.

The TACS unit see the redevelopment facilitating the great clinical work and high standards that the team provide for patients and look forward to using the world class, hybrid suite and new digitally integrated operating theatres.

“Providing excellent patient care and outstanding teaching inside brand new theatres to the upcoming generations of doctors and nurses is a great privilege, and I am excited to be part of this future.” Dr Lambrakis said.

The expanded operating theatre is now complete and expected to be operational in coming months following commissioning, user testing and operational readiness works.

The refurbished general theatre is expected to be complete by mid-2024, with the emergency theatre to be complete by late-2024.

Future works in this space will also include an Interventional Radiology intraoperative suite and an expansion of the Surgical Short Stay Unit.
